Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology refers to a specialized area of radiology that uses x-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound and other imaging technologies to guide percutaneous (through the skin) procedures to treat a variety of medical disorders without surgery. These minimally-invasive procedures include biopsies, inserting catheters (thin tubes), draining fluids and opening narrowed blood vessels. Procedures performed by interventional radiologists are generally less risky, less costly, less traumatic and require less recovery time for the patient. In addition, many of these procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis, eliminating or reducing hospital stays.

Interventional radiographic procedures commonly performed at Florida Hospital include:

  • Angiography
  • Urinary tract
  • Gastrointestinal (GI)
  • Liver/biliary
  • Chemoembolization/cancer treatment
