Florida Hospital was the first hospital in Central Florida to offer PET-CT scans, an advanced imaging technique that combines two very different technologies - positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) - in a single exam. PET is a nuclear imaging technology that records chemical activity in an organ or body tissue. CT, an x-ray based technology, produces 3D images of anatomical structures. Combined, PET-CT shows the precise location of abnormal biochemical activity that may indicate cancer or other diseases.
PET-CT has revolutionized cancer care, providing detailed information for diagnosis, planning surgery and treatment and monitoring treatment and aftercare. With PET-CT, doctors can detect tumors nearly three times smaller than masses visible on traditional scans. It enables them to better determine whether a mass is malignant (cancerous) or benign (not cancerous).
