Cystography

Cystography is an x-ray or fluoroscopic exam that includes the use of a contrast agent to diagnose disease in the urinary bladder. Some of the most common reasons doctors prescribe cystography are: to determine the cause of blood in the urine or recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs); to assess problems with bladder emptying, urinary incontinence and prostate gland problems. There may be other reasons for a physician to recommend cystography.

Risks associated with cystography are about the same as for any procedure involving x-rays and/or contrast materials. Patients with kidney failure or other kidney problems should notify their physician. There is a risk of bladder infection or bleeding caused by inserting a catheter into the bladder.

What to Expect

Preparation for a cystograph is minimal. Your doctor or our staff will give you specific instructions about any food or liquid restrictions prior to the test. You may be instructed to drink additional clear liquids the day before and day of the procedure

For the test, you may be asked to remove clothing and wear a gown. You will be asked to empty your bladder prior to the test, then you will lie face-up on the x-ray table. Contrast will be injected into your bladder through a catheter and x-rays will be taken. You may be asked to urinate while x-rays are being taken, depending on the kind of cystography your doctor prescribed.

Unless you are instructed otherwise, you are free to leave after the procedure and resume normal activities. You should drink additional fluids for a day or so after the procedure to help eliminate the contrast from your system.
